Edwin
Carter Weitz

Biography
American artist Edwin Carter Weitz (b. 1963) has spent nearly four decades pursuing images and visual ideas. His body of work spans an unusually broad range of styles, subjects, and conceptual approaches, unified by a lifelong commitment to visual exploration.
A graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in graphic design, Weitz began his career as an associate designer at Bailey Lauerman, a small Nebraska advertising agency at the time. By 28 years old, Weitz was named Creative Director and guided the firm's transformation into one of the nation's most respected independent agencies, recognized for its creative excellence and roster of national brands.
Midway through his advertising career, Weitz took his marketing experience and applied it to his fine art practice. Weitz’s unique approach of creating memorable imagery through design, photography, and advertising led to the development of his distinctive artistic process; which is grounded in visual communication and refined craftsmanship.

The process
Free from the strategic constraints of commercial communication, painting has become Weitz’s primary means of expression. Canvas serves as an open field for curiosity, experimentation, and discovery; while color, texture, and thoughtful application become the liaison between viewer and artist.
His artistic journey has followed a deliberate progression from representation to abstraction. Rather than rush toward a contemporary aesthetic, Weitz chose to build a disciplined foundation through years of figurative and landscape painting, developing technical mastery before embracing greater conceptual freedom. Rather than commit to a single style or medium, Weitz continually pursues new visual territory, believing that creative growth begins where certainty ends.
Over time, his focus shifted toward painting in series. Influenced by decades in the advertising industry, he naturally thinks in campaigns—exploring a single idea across multiple canvases rather than resolving it in a single work. As his canvases have grown in scale, so too has the breadth of his visual language, opening new possibilities for color, form, rhythm, and abstraction.
An accomplished artist, his work has received numerous national and international awards and is held in the collections of prominent corporations and institutions. Weitz remains driven by the same instinct that first drew him to the visual arts: a relentless curiosity and the conviction that the next idea is always worth chasing.
