Karen Kinder
Karen Kinder was born in Day Country, South Dakota and raised on a family farm south of Andover. Today, she lives in Brookings, South Dakota after retiring from art education. As an artist, Kinder finds inspiration from the horizon. Even though she no longer lives on the farm, the memories and the power of the landscape have remained strong.
Kinder works from dark to light and as a result her artwork is defined by rich shadows and heavy contrast. A focus on acrylics in college launched her fast and energetic style but her transition to oils in the last twenty years has freed her to paint the way she always wanted- with layers, blending, and thick brush strokes. Today, painting remains Karen Kinder’s primary focus and she continuously strives to define different passages in the hills and landscape.
